But did you really?

In the age of artificial intelligence, consent is becoming less about choice and more about compliance. As AI quietly integrates into healthcare, hiring, social media, and smart devices, users are often nudged, rushed, or coerced into agreeing to systems they barely understand.

What’s emerging is a troubling illusion: the consent mirage.

From pop-up cookies to TOS agreements, digital consent has long been a checkbox formality. But AI raises the stakes.
We're no longer agreeing to static data collection — we’re signing off on systems that evolve, infer, and act on our behalf, often in unpredictable ways.

Take health apps, for example. A 2023 study from the University of Toronto found that 72% of AI-enabled health apps share user data with third parties, often without clear user awareness.¹
Or facial recognition at airports: many travelers don’t even realize they’re being scanned, let alone opt in.

The Illusion of Choice

The real issue? Context collapse and power imbalance.

  • Lack of alternatives: Saying “no” often means losing access altogether.

In short: we’re asked for consent without being given meaningful understanding, control, or alternatives.

Companies increasingly treat user consent as a liability shield. If you said “yes,” they’re not responsible. But true ethical design demands more than legal coverage.

Consent without comprehension isn’t consent.

And it’s dangerous. Because once AI systems make decisions about credit, policing, hiring, or health, uninformed consent becomes institutional harm.
