With the onset of AI, this definition and central idea of therapy has been challenged.

In 2025, one of the most revolutionary yet complicating transitions is that AI apps have begun to operate as quasi-psychologists. They perform mood tracking, help users identify cognitive distortions, provide CBT-style reframing prompts, and monitor emotional dysregulation through patterns in language.

AI also remembers patterns better than therapists. It can identify that the intensity of “catastrophic thinking” spikes around Sunday evenings. It can detect linguistic markers of depressive ideation weeks before a human clinician notices. It can cross-reference a user’s last 14 check-ins and point out that the emotional trigger is not their relationship, but their sleep.
